Everything you need to know when hiring a loader
The loader - which has two types, the wheel loader and track loader - is a type of tractor that has a bucket on the front that is mounted on two booms (or arms) which gives the bucket the ability to lift and load dirt on to another piece of equipment (usually a dump truck).
Role of a loader
Loaders are mainly used in construction and maintenance jobs to move, load or remove materials, including:
- Gravel or rock
- Soil or sand
- Demolition debris
- Feeds for farming
- Logs for forestry
- Raw materials
Types of loaders
Loaders have different types and sizes which can be utilised on a variety of job sites.
- Wheel loader - the most common type of loader which also comes in different tonnages:
- Track loader - this has tracks for mobility, rather than four wheels
- Mini loader or Tool carrier - these are smaller loaders which have less capacity compared to the bigger loaders and are ideal for small-scale projects like landscaping.
- IT loader - IT stands for integrated tool. Unlike a wheel loader, IT loaders have interchangeable buckets and quick hitches such as pallet forks.
Selecting a loader
Always consider the space available on your job site before selecting the type of loader you will hire. Loaders also have a specified load limit, so make sure that you estimate the weight of the loads that the loader will be handling in order to select the correct gear size and type. Most loaders require a license to operate and it is best to check with your equipment suppliers beforehand.
How much does a loader cost?
The cost of hiring a loader will depend on the size, weight capacity and fuel type. Smaller loaders tend to be cheaper to hire, but it may be limited by their maximum tonnage capacity. Diesel loaders are also cheaper to run.
