Everything you need to know about hiring a forklift
Forklifts, also known as fork or lift truck, are industrial trucks used to lift and move materials for short distances. The forklift got its name from the prongs or fork used to lift and transport materials. Every forklift has a specified maximum weight capacity as well as a specified centre of gravity which should always be complied to in order to avoid tip-overs. This information is usually located on a nameplate provided by the equipment manufacturer.
What a forklift can do
Forklifts are predominantly used in warehousing and manufacturing operations, and can be used for a wide range of jobs including (but not limited to):
- Unloading small containers
- Stacking warehouse racks
- Loading pallets onto trucks
- Container handling
- Lifting of heavy equipment
In most warehouse operations, forklifts have load capacities between one and five tonnes, however there are larger forklifts which have capacities over 41 tonnes which is mostly used for container handling.
Types of forklifts
There are a number of different types of forklifts
- All terrain forklifts - built to work on rough or uneven surfaces
- Narrow aisle forklifts - for those tight-spaced areas
- Walkie stacker - a walk-behind pallet truck with a mast for lifting pallets to heights
What to consider before hiring a forklift
Most forklifts operate with rear wheel steering, which means that cornering is a different experience to other driving. Extra care should also be taken when cornering with loads raised up since the forklift might tip over.
How much does a forklift cost?
Forklift hire rates will always depend on the load capacity, type of forklift, attachments and duration of hire. Most hire companies will provide a reduced hire rate the longer you hire a forklift. For a short term weekly hire rate, you could be looking at between $200 to $350 for a generic forklift ($600 for all terrain), but if you hire for over a month, you can end up paying between $100 to $200 per week.
